“The Method” (El método) is a 2005 Spanish, Argentine, and Italian thriller film based on the play “El método Grönholm” by Jordi Galceran and it is directed by Marcelo Pineryo. The film was nominated to five Goya Awards and won in the categories of Best Screenplay (Mateo Gil and Marcelo Pineryo) and Best Supporting Actor (Carmelo Gomez).
The story is taken place in a closed conference room where seven people are applying for an elite, executive position for a mysterious corporation known as ‘Dekia’. There is no interviewer in the process (but there is a “mole”, which is one of the seven people posing as an applicant) and they must go though the “Grönholm Method” which is basically a series of psychological tests which eliminate applicants one by one. As the tests progress and get more intense, the applicants learn about themselves and their weaknesses as they basically eliminate themselves. At the end of the film, the winner of the job is the one the company was going to hire anyways and just used the other applicants to test that person.
This was a very good film and I recommend it to everyone, especially those who are interested in the corporate world and psychology. The film was exciting, mysterious, and you really wanted to know what happened next. I loved it when the true colors of the applicants were beginning to show and how they handled themselves in certain situations. The directors did a great job and the acting in this film was superb from most of the actors. Eduardo Fernandez really stuck out and gave a phenomenal performance, especially during the more emotional scenes. Ernest Alterio was equally amazing and was very realistic at playing someone who was in a very uncomfortable situation. His uneasiness made me feel uneasy since Ernesto acted it out so well. Pablo Echarri did a splendid job as well as Adriana Ozores, Carmelo Gomez, and Natalia Verbeke. As for Najwa Nimri, she was good as well and seems to really know how to play ‘broken’ women. As much as I simply adore Eduardo Noriega, his acting was not that good in this film and at times painful to watch which was a surprise to me since he is usually amazing in his other films. However, the film was still very well-worth it and I give it an 8/10.
